Kind Regards
Kind Regardsā is the second duo release from guitarist OrenāÆAmbarchi and drummer EricāÆThielemans, issued on ADāÆ93. Capturing a single expansive performance recorded live in Poitiers, France in NovemberāÆ2023, the LP presents one continuous improvisation lasting over 45 minutes. The recording showcases the duoās deeply refined musical languageāevolved from their earlier trio collaboration with minimalist visionary Charlemagne Palestineāand balances meditative calm with bursts of melodic invention and rhythmic drive.
Engineered and mixed by longtime collaborator Joe Talia in high-fidelity, the recording weaves hypnotic tom patterns and shimmering Leslie-processed guitar textures. The music transitions from pulsing ambient textures to irregular grooves, with Ambarchiās guitar at times echoing the spiritual resonance of Alice Coltraneās Wurlitzer chords. When Thielemans shifts into jazz-inflected drumming, his supple touch and expressive dynamics evoke the sensibilities of Jack DeJohnette or Billy Hart. Gradually building to a climactic swirl of distorted harmonic broods and crashing cymbals, the duo demonstrate the magic of two masters improvising in real timeāeven when they simply begin to play and follow wherever the music leads.
